CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) — A familiar face will return to the sidelines at Calhoun Academy this upcoming season.

Gerry Winters returns as the head coach of the Cougars following the departure of Tim Melton to Delta Academy.

There’s much to look forward to in 2015 at Calhoun Academy as the Cougars bring back a strong and experienced team hoping to channel their inner 2013 and make it to the State Title.

For Coach Winters, just returning to the sidelines and getting back into the groove is what’s on his mind thus far.

“I’ve had it pretty easy the last three years with Coach Melton taking charge,” Winters said. “Now that I’ve taken the reigns back over, I find I didn’t have as much energy as I thought I did but it will get there.”

There’s plenty of energy back on the team for this season at CA.

The Cougars graduate just three seniors and return senior athlete Scott Shankle and talented running back Riley Dotson.

Add those pieces to the depth returning on the senior class and there’s plenty to be excited about at Calhoun Academy in 2015.

“We have a pretty good nucleus coming back,” Winters said. “Coach Melton left me in good shape. There’s not one player that stands out and they all do what they’re supposed to do and mesh together. They’re going to be pretty solid.”

Calhoun Academy will start the season on the road at Humphreys Academy before returning home to face former head coach Tim Melton and Delta Academy the following week.
