Fulton native and MSU junior Chad Ramey is leading the way for the Bulldogs after day one of the SEC Men’s Golf Championship.

MSU turned in a 6-over-par, 286 to navigate up the leader board for a sixth place finish on Friday. The Bulldogs finished 11 strokes back of the clubhouse leading No. 19 Auburn Tigers, who State defeated at the Tiger Invitational back in March.

“I feel like we got a pretty decent first round under our belt,” Coach Clay Homan said. “The course played difficult today with a constant 25 MPH wind. We avoided the double bogeys, which is what you have to do around here. The wind is forecasted to keep blowing over the next two days, so we just have to keep grinding away and avoid making the big mistakes like we did today.”

The field at the Sea Island Golf Course includes 13 Top 50 ranked teams, Ole Miss is the only team ranked outside of the Top 50. No. 9 Florida finished the day at 21-over-par for a last-place finish in Friday’s opening round.

Ramey, who finished tied for fifth on Friday, shot a 1-under-par, 69 for the opening 18 holes. The performance in round one placed Ramey only four strokes off of the lead. The junior has already picked up seven Top 10’s this season; Ramey finished with a seventh-place card at last year’s SEC Championship.

Finishing even on the day, junior Axel Boasson tied for 12th in the first round. Aiding Boasson’s score was four birdies, adding to his team-leading total of 105 birdies. The Iceland native has finished with an 11th place finish or better in six of his last seven outings.

Junior Barrett Edens and senior Robi Calvesbert both finished in outside of the Top 25. Edens fired off a 3-over-par, 73 to finish Friday with a 30th place card. Calvesbert turned in a 4-over-par, 74 to finish tied for 35th.

Rounding out the Maroon and White scoring from Sea Island was junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan. The junior finished at 10-over-par on for the opening round. Sakulpolphaisan has finished in the Top 25 10 out of the 11 tourneys played this season.

Homan’s squad will tee off at Hole No. 1 at 8:20 a.m. EST tomorrow. The Bulldogs will be paired with Alabama and Texas A&M.
