OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – East Webster’s season came to an end Friday a win short of the school’s first-ever football state title.

The Wolverines (14-2) lost 39-20 to Bassfield (14-2), which won the championship for the fourth-straight season. The Yellow Jackets knocked out Calhoun City the previous two years in the title game after beating Eupora in the 2012 championship.

Head Coach Doug Wilson led East Webster to three-straight road playoff wins to reach the title game after finishing as the runner up in Region 4-2A.

Bassfield led 20-0 at halftime. The Wolverines scored with under eight minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 33-7, before finding the end zone twice more with under two minutes to play.
