Former Starkville Yellow Jacket Named MACJC Pitcher of the Week

SCOOBA, Miss. (WCBI/EMCC Athletics) – For his no-hit pitching performance in last week’s 3-0 home win over Mississippi Delta, East Mississippi Community College freshman Nick Brooks has been named the MACJC Baseball Pitcher of the Week, as voted on by the sports information directors of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges.

Freshman Nick Brooks was tabbed as MACJC Pitcher of the Week for his performance last Thursday in pitching a no-hitter against Mississippi Delta.

Brooks, a product of Starkville High School, struck out 10 Delta batters and scattered seven walks while using 140 pitches during last Wednesday’s complete-game, seven-inning victory over the visiting Trojans.  The win marked Brooks’ first collegiate victory in four decisions this season.  He faced 29 MDCC batters during the contest, inducing six fly ball outs and five ground ball outs to go along with his career-high 10 strikeouts.

With a flair for the dramatic thus far during his young collegiate career, Brooks opened the month by belting a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Lions a 12-8 victory over East Central Community College back on March 1 in the opening game of their home doubleheader sweep over the Warriors.

A versatile performer for the Lions, the 5-foot-7, 175-pound Brooks has also seen action in right field and at second base as a collegiate freshman.

Coach Chris Rose’s EMCC Lions, now 12-16 overall and 2-6 in MACJC North Division play following their pair of Monday road losses (5-3 & 6-4) at Holmes Community College, open a four-date homestand by playing host to Northwest Mississippi Community College Friday on the Scooba campus.  The division doubleheader is slated for a 4 p.m. start at EMCC’s Gerald Poole Field.

Next week in Scooba, EMCC will welcome Coahoma on Wednesday (April 3) and Itawamba on Saturday (April 6) as well as Northeast Mississippi the following Tuesday (April 9).
