MDWFP Says Don’t Forget Fall Fishing

JACKSON – Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) fisheries biologists are excited about the fall fishing season in Northeast Mississippi. Fishing has started to improve with gradually decreasing water temperatures. “In the fall, fish start feeding more in preparation for the winter months,” said MDWFP Fisheries Biologist, Tyler Stubbs.  “Some of the best fishing in this part of the state occurs during the fall, and is often overlooked, as most folks are concentrating on hunting season,” said Stubbs.  Bass anglers should target lakes that have large shad and shiner populations such as Pickwick, Bay Springs, the canal section lakes A through E, and Lake Lamar Bruce.  “Anglers have been very successful all summer at Lake Lamar Bruce, and we expect this lake will continue to provide prime fishing for area bass anglers this fall,” said Stubbs.

Crappie and bream fishing is improving too.  Columbus and Aberdeen Lakes boast some of the best fall crappie fishing in the state.  Most anglers target submerged structure in the old river runs. State lakes and state park lakes provide great fall fishing opportunities and a smaller, quieter atmosphere.  “Tippah County Lake, Lake Lamar Bruce, and Tombigbee State Park all provide great fall fishing for crappie, bream, and catfish, and they all have abundant bank fishing areas,” said Stubbs.  Most anglers target submerged tree tops and other fish attractors using live bait.
