Ole Miss QB Questions?

An Ole Miss quarterback competition that appeared to be settled in August is back on the table.

Rebels coach Hugh Freeze says he doesn’t know who will start Saturday night when Texas A&M visits in its first SEC road game.

Junior college transfer Bo Wallace never completely distanced himself from Barry Brunetti in August but has started each game and was impressive in wins against Central Arkansas and Tulane.

In the last three weeks, he’s struggled with turnovers. It was interceptions against Texas and last week against Alabama, fumbles against Tulane in between.

“We’re going to work hard this week to find out who prepares the best, who feels the most confident with the game plan and who can take our football team and move us down the field or at least don’t put our football team in bad positions,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said.

Randall Mackey, last year’s starting quarterback but a running back this season, said he does not expect to be part of the competition.

Wallace was intercepted twice by the Crimson Tide. His first one came when he scrambled out of the pocket left and threw back right – into the arms of an Alabama defender.

The Tide took over at the Ole Miss 35 and scored its first touchdown shortly thereafter.

For the season, Wallace has completed 62.5 percent of his pass attempts for 840 yards with seven TDs and six interceptions.

He played the Alabama game with a bruised shoulder but said that was not a factor in his performance.

Texas A&M was dominant in a 58-10 win over Arkansas, but the Aggies are 11th in the SEC in total defense giving up 411 yards a game.

The Aggies are 13th in passing yards allowed but fifth in pass defense efficiency.

Wallace says the new competition won’t change his preparation.

“As close as the race was the whole time, I’ve always thought Barry was on my back the whole time. This is the same week for me,” he said.
