WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – The West Point boys basketball team is senior laden to say the least. Green Wave head coach Brad Cox has a problem all coaches would love to have. He has so many seniors, he can’t put them all in the game at the same time.

“High school basketball is 32 minutes,” Cox said. “Finding time for everybody is challenging at times.”

A group of eight seniors has led the Green Wave to a 17-2 record this season. For a comparison, Mississippi State has played with fewer than eight scholarship players recently.

It’s a group that is clearly familiar with one another.

“They’ve been playing together since they were freshman,” Cox said. “They know where they’re going to be on the court, and the thing about this group is that they just love the game of basketball.”

Center Diquan Ewing is the tallest at six-foot four-inches tall.

“Our main goal is coming together as a family,” Ewing said.

Forward Demarius Calvert’s, whom they call D.C., strength is on the inside.

“We’re all best friends, we all know each other, we all have love for each other. It wouldn’t be the same without each other,” Calvert said.

Small forward Juan Davis, who at 6-6 presents matchup problems for opposing teams, said the team has moved past its issues when it faced double-digit losses last season.

“We didn’t make it like we wanted to last year so we’re coming back with a vengeance,” Davis said. “We have character and discipline, and you have to have grades, so that we can set example for the kids coming behind us.”

A.J. Jones and Trey Williams are the high-I.Q. guards who run the show, and Tony Craddeth, Qdarius Chandler and Darius White are the supporting cast.

“We have a great group of kids. They’re very talented on the court but they’re good kids off the court,” Cox said. “We have very few problems as far as discipline at school. They’re just good kids and get good grades.”

Many of these eight seniors are drawing interest from Division I and junior college basketball teams, but first West Point is eyeing a state championship run.

A state title would be the Green Wave’s first in school history.
