CLINTON, Miss. (WCBI) — It is your ordinary David vs. Goliath story.

Bassfield, the three-time defending 2A State Champions facing the East Webster Wolverines, a team that is playing in just their second ever State Championship game. EW STATE TITLE1

That’s how EW head coach Doug Wilson sees the game, but he prefers another biblical reference to the game.

“I think of Jonah and the Whale,” Wilson said at Monday’s MHSAA State Championship press conference in Clinton. “I just hope they spit Jack (East Webster’s senior quarterback) out.”

It is a tall task for the Wolverines, but one that they relish.

East Webster has played their last three playoff games on the road, and they look forward to the opportunity of dethroning the champs in their David vs. Goliath match-up.

Bassfield head coach Lance Mancuso wasn’t a fan of the comparison and for good reason.

“Not sure I like the David and Goliath comparison,” Mancuso said. “I know how that one ended.”

Kickoff between the Wolverines and Yellow Jackets will be Friday at 3:00pm from Vaught Hemingway Stadium. The game will be broadcasted on WCBI’s cable only channel, MyMS.
