FULTON, Miss. (WCBI/LetsGoICC.com) – Itawamba Community College redshirt freshman Blake Bennett signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career at the University of Memphis next season.

“It’s a blessing to be able to play at the next level,” said Bennett, who spent one season at Ole Miss. “Not many people get that chance so I have to give it my all and I thank God for the ability and chance to do that.”

Bennett has appeared in 11 games for the Indians this season and leads the team in wins with a 6-3 record. The Memphis, TN native has 41 strikeouts in 61.1 innings pitched.

“It (Memphis) is home and I’ll get to play in front of friends and family,” said Bennett. “The staff there isn’t just about baseball, it’s also about what you want to do with your life and that really stuck out to me.”

The 6’2 right hander has helped the Indians make a push for the playoffs and picked up a win by throwing a complete game in his last regular season start Tuesday at Holmes.

“I’ve had a lot of fun at ICC and I have grown as a person and baseball player,” said Bennett. “The coaching staff has helped me develop a lot of attributes that can affect my life outside of just baseball.”

Bennett currently has a 5.58 ERA and a .857 fielding percentage and has four pick offs this season. He is the first Indian to sign with the Memphis Tigers since Andy Bowman in 2014.
