Video: MSU Talks Governor’s Cup Match-Up with Ole Miss

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI/MSU Athletics)  – Fresh off their first series victory against No. 13 LSU since 2006, No. 4 Mississippi State baseball (27-13-1, 10-8 SEC) will travel to Pearl, Mississippi Tuesday night to take on No. 12 Ole Miss (31-10, 10-8 SEC) in a non-conference matchup. The 6:30 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on the SEC Network.

The Diamond Dawgs won their fifth conference series of the year by taking two of three from LSU (12-8, 2-1, 8-11) in Baton Rouge. The Bulldogs have also now won five series against team’s ranked 11th or higher. Included in that stretch was a 2 of 3 showing against the then No. 11 Rebels.

Ole Miss just completed a three-game sweep of SEC foe Auburn (6-4, 7-4, 6-5) at Swayze Field.

MSU leads the all-time series against the Rebels 246-205-5, and also lead 31-27-1 at neutral sites. The Rebels took home the Governors Cup last season in an 11-1 contest.

·      In the latest rankings released Monday, MSU was voted 4th in the Coaches Poll, 3rd by Baseball America, 8th by Collegiate Baseball, 3rd by Perfect Game, 3rd by the NCBWA and 4th by D1 Baseball.

·      As of April 19, Mississippi State’s offense ranks eighth in the country in doubles (93, 1st in SEC), tenth in hits (450, 3rd in SEC), 29th in on-base percentage (.397, 3rd in SEC), and 21st in batting average (.308, 3rd in SEC).

·      The Bulldog’s pitching staff is 13th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (9.10, 5th in SEC)

·      After hitting .243 with two outs in 2015, the Bulldogs are terrorizing opposing pitching with a .312 batting average (1st in SEC) with two down this season.
