MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – High school football is off to a great start and after week one, we’re highlighting a player who not only shows up on the field but also produces in the classroom.

He doesn’t get tackled much but he plays one of the most important positions on the football field. When the game is on the line, it’s his job to bring home the win.
This week’s athlete of the week is Zachery Kauffman, a kicker at Noxubee County High School.

“When times get rough, we can count him to kick a field goal for us or get some extra points,” says Tyrone Shorter, Head Football Coach at Noxubee County High School.

Coach Shorter says Kauffman is his go-to player. He punts, kicks and is on special teams. Kauffman attends football camps specifically for kickers, studying his position just like he studies in class.

“What I do to prepare as a kicker is I stretch before every game and every practice. No matter if it’s from my lower back down to my calves, anywhere. Flexibility is the most important part of being a kicker,” says Kauffman.

While being one of the best on the field ranks high for Kauffman, keeping a 3.5 grade point average is his priority.

“With long practices that we have, I’m still able to get home at a reasonable time and manage my time wisely. I’m able to focus on my subjects and not what’s going on around me. I’m able to get everything done in a timely manner,” says Kauffman.

The football staff at Noxubee County High all agree that Kauffman stands out in the crowd.

“He’s a great kid. I’ve never had any problems in the three years that I’ve coached him. I’ve never had a problem with him in the classroom. All the teachers say great things about him,” says Shorter.

You can catch Zachery Kauffman on the field this Friday when Noxubee takes on Columbus.

Kauffman is a high school senior and says science is his favorite subject.
