Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — Due to the storms of the past week, the Columbus Riverwalk is flooded. The Tombigbee River couldn’t handle the constant downpour, flooding almost the entire path.

The Columbus Public Works Department said this is the fourth time since the creation of the walking path that it has been flooded.

Director Casey Bush said “…we get fire hoses, and blow the walk first…then we also have to blow the grass and get all the mud…that came from the flooding.”

Bush said that process takes two to three days to complete, with crews working ten hour days to complete. That process doesn’t begin, Bush explained, until the water has receded to the river.

Hopefully this week, if not, early part of next week, we can try and start on it”, said Bush, “…we’re praying for this week so we can the Riverwalk back…”

Bush also asked locals to stay away from the park until the clean-up is finished.

The flooding also causes concern for structures like bridges and pillars. Bush said his teams takes that into consideration, and “…when the water recedes, we go back and check the whole Riverwalk as far as any matienance problem that needs to be done and we’ll take care of it.”

The Public Works Department also said the clean-up process at the Riverwalk will be delayed as the city works to solve the barge issue at the Stennis Lock and Dam.

There is currently no timetable as to when the Riverwalk will be cleared for use.
