Downtown Columbus Beefs Up Security With New Cameras

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Efforts to improve security in downtown Columbus take another step forward today.

High definition cameras were installed today at downtown intersections along Fifth and Main Streets.

Early last year, Columbus Light and Water installed more lighting in the same areas.

City spokesman Joe Dillon says crews have been waiting on the equipment to become available.

The cameras can record 24 hours a day, some which have already been installed near the Trotter Convention Center.

Original light improvements, were in response to a shooting on Fifth Street South last March.

Additional lighting has also been added to other parts of the city.

City officials say the video will be available to all law enforcement agencies during related investigations.
