In the early morning hours of May 3, 2015, Hughes entered the Bakers’ home and viciously attacked and killed Mr. and Mrs. Baker. Their bodies were discovered by family members later that same day. Hughes confessed to the crimes after being questioned by law enforcement and was indicted by a Pontotoc Grand Jury in September 2015 for two counts of Capital Murder. He was an acquaintance of the Bakers and had relatives who lived near their home. Hughes will not be eligible for parole or early release. Investigator Chad Cummings of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations was in charge of the investigation. The Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department along with the FBI assisted the investigation. “This is one of the most horrific murders we have seen in this District,” said District Attorney John Weddle. “Hughes is dangerous and we want to make sure he never has the opportunity to inflict upon anyone else the pain and suffering he put Donald and Evelyn through. No one should have to endure what the Baker family has had to endure,” Weddle said. The case was prosecuted by District Attorney John Weddle and Assistant District Attorneys Paul Gault and Sadie Gardner.
