The Meaning of Good Friday

WEBSTER COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – While hunting for eggs is one of this weekend’s holiday celebrations, Christians all around the world are celebrating Good Friday by holding services.

First Baptist Church of Eupora has been having a Good Friday Service for as long as members can remember.

On this day, Christians remember the death of Christ and celebrate what he did for believers 2,000 years ago.

“People thought it was over on Friday, but actually, it was only the beginning, as far as eternal life, and what God offers to us, and how he died for us,” says Pastor Travis Gray.

Some might not understand why it’s called Good Friday because of Jesus’s gruesome crucifixion, but Pastor Gray tells why it’s known as what it is.

“The original Good Friday, it’s kind of hard to say that it was called Good Friday then, but to remember what happened and took place, but also recognize what is still happening. What he’s still doing for us today and just remember why Christ died for us and is alive today. The tomb is empty and we’re here to worship him for that.”

Many church members filled the church’s pews to hear today’s main message.

“Jesus did for us, what we couldn’t do and he was willing to do what he didn’t deserve and through his grace and mercy, he allowed us to have forgiveness because of him dying for us, and you know, we take that for granted too much and I think we need to remember that more every day, not just on Good Friday, or Easter Sunday.”

This church member has been attending the church’s Good Friday Service since the 70’s. He says today is not only a day to reflect, but it’s also another day to share God’s word to others.

“I think our world today is moving away from Christianity and I think it moves us to go out and spread the word even harder,” says David Faulkenbery.

Easter is a time for egg hunts and fun, but Pastor Gray says it’s important to remember the true meaning.

“People can loose focus about what it’s all about, but you know, we can give meaning to a lot of things that shouldn’t be there, but if we keep him first in everything we do, it’s a positive testimony of what he can do in our lives,” says Gray.
