MSU Celebrates 136th Birthday

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The rich tradition at Mississippi State University in Starkville is being celebrated Friday in a big way.

There were three big cakes to prove it as MSU turns 136 years old. The date coincides with the 1878 anniversary of when legislation was signed, establishing the Mississippi Agricultural And Mechanical College that would become Mississippi State University.

During the celebration at the Bull Ring near Colvard Student Union, alumni of the institution reflecting on the past history were excited about the future.

MSU has experienced significant growth in student enrollment, and is looking to boast enrollment by the year 2018.

“Continuing to be a leader in the state of Mississippi amongst higher education institutions and really tie in to economic development. Trying to get as many students in the pipe line for higher education, so they can make a positive impact on the state,” said Jeff Davis, MSU Alumni Association.

An alumni capital campaign goal is aimed at reaching $600 million in support by 2018. It’s early 2014 and they are nearing the $400 million mark.
