MSU Thrashes Alcorn State

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI Sports/MSU Athletics) – In the first home game of the 2013 season, Dan Mullen and his Mississippi State Bulldogs handled the Alcorn State Braves 51-7, moving to 1-1 on the year.

In his first career start, Dak Prescott threw for a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another in leading MSU to the win.

The Bulldogs had seven new starters in the game, including sophomore quarterback Dak Prescott, who played the entire first two quarters and led his team to a 37-0 halftime lead before freshman Damian Williams finished out the game.

Those freshmen were a big portion of the contest, as true freshmen led MSU in both rushing and receiving, with Ashton Shumpert (98 yards and two touchdowns) making his debut in the backfield, while wide receiver Fred Ross had three catches for 46 yards.

“The losses always look worse than they are and often the wins look better than they are,” Mullen said. “There are certainly some things we need to coach and improve on from this game.”

Next Saturday MSU travels to Auburn for its first SEC game of the season. The 6 p.m. CT game will be televised by ESPN2.
