EUGENE, Ore. (WCBI Sports) – Former Mississippi State slugger Hunter Renfroe has played his first eight games in Eugene, Oregon with a Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. He went 0-for-4 Thursday in the Emeralds’ loss but he’s been hitting in the heart of the order and playing well.

Renfroe is 10-for-32, which is good for a .313 average. He has two homeruns and 3 RBI. He’s walked three times but has struck out nine times. Renfroe was the 13 overall pick, taken by Padres in the first round. He left after his junior season with MSU.

His former coach, John Cohen, is gearing up for the 2014 season. WCBI caught up with MSU’s head man Thursday.

“He’s off to a great start. I’m really proud of Hunter,” Cohen said. “Certainly, professional baseball is a grind so you have to bring it every single day. There’s a level of consistency that Hunter has but you can’t get overly dramatic about the beginning or the end. It’s a conglomeration. It’s a whole year. When you add together the fall and spring he’s had for us, and so far his professional career, it’s pretty exciting stuff for Hunter.”
