Video: State Superintendent Under Pressure to Back off of Restroom Issue

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) -The top educator in the state reversed course Wednesday, saying Mississippi will not follow federal guidance for transgender students.

State Education Superintendent Carey Wright has  received threatening letters, including harsh language from state Republicans.

In these letters, Wright is asked to step down from her role in education if she refuses to follow the state GOP leadership.

On Wednesday Wright changed her position.

In a statement, Wright says the department of education will follow the lead of state leadership.

The Mississippi Department of Education now says it won’t follow new Federal guidance on use of bathrooms and locker rooms by transgender students.

Wright says no action will be taken until the state Board of Education could discuss the situation.
