New North Mississippi Phone Scam

UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-Pay your fine now over the phone or go to jail…A new scam is being used to trick North Mississippians into giving their debit and credit card numbers over the phone. The scammers call under a number disguised as the phone number of a local agency, such as the sheriff’s office or District Attorney’s Office and tell the victim they owe outstanding fines. They demand payment over the phone or face arrest. Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says this is a scam. The Sheriff’s Office does not accept payments over the phone nor do they accept credit card payments. If you receive a call saying you owe outstanding fines you should notify local authorities immediately. Never give out your personal information over the phone.
