Tommy Lopez joined the WCBI sports team as the weekend sports anchor in April of 2013. He has covered events like the College World Series, the Peach Bowl and the Sugar Bowl while in Mississippi. He received Mississippi AP Broadcasters awards for Best Sportscast in 2014 and 2015.
Tommy comes to the South after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia and covered VCU and University of Virginia sports for six years before coming to Columbus. He covered the VCU men’s basketball team’s 2011 run to the Final Four, which included producing a package that aired on ESPN. While in Virginia, he interned in the sports and news departments of TV stations WCAV-TV and WRIC-TV and worked at radio stations WINA and WKAV starting at age 16. He learned about the broadcasting business from a young age from his father, who has been a radio personality for more than 45 years.
