Washington, D.C. (WCBI) – The two Tupelo ambushed in a shootout with a bank robber could be honored by Congress if one politician has his way.

Congressman Alan Nunnelee says he’ll write letters of support for fatally wounded Sgt. Gale Stauffer and injured officer Joseph Maher to be nominated for the Congressional Badge of Bravery.

Nunnelee made the comments on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Law enforcement officers must be injured while on duty and perform a brave act while at risk.
