PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (WCBI) — Philadelphia could be the next town in the region to call a referendum on legalizing hard liquor sales.

Liquor sale supporters in the Neshoba County town are close to having enough signatures on petitions to ask aldermen to set a referendum. They hope to have it in conjunction with the city’s May elections.

A new state law allows cities with a population of at least 5,000 people to call for a vote without residents outside the city limits participating.

If approved, aldermen set rules and regulations governing restaurants and liquor stores.

Corinth voters recently approved alcohol sales and New Albany voters will decide the issue March 19.
