PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — One of the nation’s greatest soprano singers will get a street named for her in her hometown.

Pontotoc aldermen are changing the name of part of North College Street to Ruby Elzy Drive in honor of the singer who made the role of Serena famous in Geroge Gershwin’s folk opera “Porgy and Bess.”

The street will run from Oxford Street north to Bolton Street.

Elzy was born in Pontotoc in 1908 and got her start singing at age 4 at McDonald Methodist Church which is on North College Street in the section to be renamed.

She toured worldwide in concerts and performed in movies and on Broadway. She was set to make her debut on the Metropolitan Opera stage when she died at age 35 following surgery for a benign tumor.
