Video: Residents react To Former Mathiston Police Chief Being Arrested

MATHISTON, Miss. (WCBI)- Webster County Sheriff Tim Mitchell confirms to WCBI that former Mathiston Police Chief, Shane Box was arrested this Friday morning and charged with five counts of embezzlement by a public official.
Attorney General Jim Hood’s office said Box is accused of the embezzlement of five city-owned guns.

Aldermen placed him on suspension in April. He submitted his resignation last week, but aldermen officially accepted it Tuesday night.

There has been weeks of speculation about the investigation.

If convicted, Box could spend up to 20 years in jail.

Box resigned three days ago, and is free on a $75,000 bond.

Residents in Mathiston have mixed reactions to Friday’s news about their former Police Chief being arrested.

“I’m just shocked, because to me he was like a symbol of hope for the community,” said David Sykes, Mathiston resident.

“I think our leaders should be more responsible and held accountable to the highest extinct for something like this, so I have no compassion for him, and believe he should be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law,” said Falisa Miller.
There will be a special election to fill Box’s post on July 12th.
