Everything is going up for Saltillo, so the question now is: what’s the next step for the Tigers?

“We just have to keep our kids pressing and pushing for more,” head coach Pat Byrd said. “We talk about complacency all the time. When you’ve had two winning seasons in a row, other places don’t think that’s a big deal but it is for us. We have to keep pressing and pushing our kids to strive for more and improve.”

Saltillo though is looking for more than just a playoff birth this season.

Their superstar running back, Diamante Pounds, has that mindset and he’s looking for a State Championship.

“Anything is possible,” said Pounds. “They said the Seahawks couldn’t beat the Broncos to win the Super Bowl but they did. I think we can go to the State Championship.”

And Mookie isn’t the only one who’s thinking State Title.

“We’re going to make the playoffs and try to win State,” senior Damon Cayson said. “We’re the senior class and it’s our last year. We would like a ring.”

“I hope we are all expecting a little more this year,” coach Byrd said. “You’ve made the playoffs twice and played the team that won the State Championship in Starkville 2 years ago, then you played Callaway last year who played for the North Half Title this past year. It’s time for us to get that home playoff game and see if we can get beyond the first round.”

With the talent returning for coach Pat Byrd, anything could happen in 2014 for the Saltillo Tigers. They’ll start the season on the road against 6A’s DeSoto Central before returning home to host Pontotoc.
