SULLIGENT, Alabama (WCBI Sports) – One of the most experienced coaches you’ll find anywhere is stepping in at Sulligent High School. Dennis Robbins has been a coach in one form or another for 35 years in Mississippi and Texas, including ten years in Ecru at Pontotoc.

Moving to Alabama, he’s taking over a team that’s trying to recover from some underachieving seasons.

“The program is down right now but these kids and coaches, everybody is working hard,” Robbins said.

The players are looking to move forward.

“Disappointment, it helps you for next year. We’re just ready to build on it,” senior Lucas Reeves said.

“Last year we had a tough, rough season,” senior Roman Glass said. “We’re practicing our plays hard, we’re hitting the weight room hard, ain’t nobody going to give up like we did a little bit last year.”

“It was something to learn from,” senior Brad Marchant said. “We won the last two games, that gave us a taste of what it’s going to be like this year.”

It’s a scheme overhaul for the Blue Devils. Robbins is installing everything from scratch, and the offense has a little bit of everything in it.

“It’s something totally different for them,” he said. “They’re picking it up well.”

It’s a senior-laden group. Fourth year Nate Gardner is back at quarterback.

“We’ve got some experience on offense and some on defense. I think we just start with an empty slate and every Friday night we just play the best we can,” he said.

Sulligent remains in 2A, though it has changed regions. It’s a team anxious to get a couple in the win column in 2014.
