COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -A Mississippi Supreme Court Justice made a stop in Columbus Thursday.

James Maxwell was appointed to the position by Governor Phil Bryant earlier this year. He replaced former Justice David Chandler.

The former Court of Appeals judge and federal prosecutor from Oxford is making the rounds to meet more of the people he serves in North Mississippi.

“The Supreme Court is kind of removed. It’s somewhat behind the curtain, but I think it’s important for the people to know that we are the court of last resort. So, any appeal that comes up through the appeals system ends with the Supreme Court. So, it’s important to have good justices up there that understand the law.”

Maxwell will be on the ballot in November in hopes of keeping his seat on the state Supreme Court by being elected.
