LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A federal tax evasion prison sentence and pending foreclosure is forcing a Lowndes County nursing home to close.

The last of about a dozen residents are having to find new places to live after the state shut down Homeplace Nursing Home on Yorkville Road in New Hope.

Its owner, Denny Nooner, is scheduled to report to federal prison Tuesday to begin serving a 30-month prison term.

He also is almost two years behind of mortgage payments.

The state has been working for 18 months to shut down the facility for not meeting state financial and safety standards, including the lack of a sprinkler system.

Residents and their families, some who just moved in during the last two months, have been left scrambling by conflicting information.

The state gave formal notice of the closure last week.
