Tornado Aftermath In Lamar County, AL

LAMAR COUNTY, AL. (WCBI) – Storms swept through Mississippi and Alabama on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, including tornadoes.

One of those tornadoes left its mark on one Alabama county.

“It’s been several years since I’ve seen damage this bad,” says Sulligent Police Chief, Jason Clifton.

A tornado comes quick, and destroys fast.

This twister brought down trees and power lines, threw planes around at the Lamar County Airport, and took down a home and business.

“Well, you don’t never expect it to be you. It’s always going to be somebody else that will get hit, but when you pull up on it at one o’clock in the morning, and everything is gone, it really hits you. It’s you it happened to,” says Carr.

JC Tire Center planted its roots in this spot four years ago, and in minutes, it was ripped away.

“A lot of money invested, and you can look across the street over there. There’s tires strode everywhere, so we’ll probably be picking up tires out of the road for a while, or out of the woods for a while, but you know, it’s going to take a while to clean everything up, but I’m thankful that it wasn’t my house, like across the road. We can rebuild this you know, and I had a place to lay down and sleep last night, but you know, it’s a storm we all go through sometimes in life, and we’ll go through this one and get over it,” says JC Tire Center Owner, Jamison Carr.

After the tornado destroyed the tire shop, it blew across the highway to this home where it was destroyed, and a family was trapped inside, and as you can see, the damage is just very, very extensive.

“They were for a slight little time. They were in there until they got some of the stuff moved so they could get out of the bedroom where they were. Yeah, they were trapped for a little while,” says Carr.

Everyone made it out safe, but one person was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The National Weather Service has sent a team to Lamar County to look at the damage to determine exactly how strong the storm was.
