COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A second veterans monument now sits at the Lowndes County Court House.
During the annual Veteran’s Day Program in Columbus, a World War I statue was dedicated to the Lowndes County veterans who lost their lives at war.

The monument was built in 1933 and stood at the Magnolia Bowl.

Saturday, it was re-dedicated by the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors.

A little rain didn’t stop the crowd from coming out to Columbus Veteran’s Day Program.

A number of local vets and their families came out for the ceremony.

A Wreath now lays on this veterans monument in downtown Columbus.

It’s an annual tradition for the community to honor those who have served our country.

The featured speaker, Colonel John Nichols with the Columbus Air Force Base, has one message for those in attendance.

“The message today was simple, it’s a time to honor all those who are serving and all those that have served in any capacity in defense of our nation,” said Colonel Nichols.

Colonel Nichols says the support veterans receive in the Golden Triangle is like none other.

“I can honestly tell you there is no better place and I’ve served and been to a lot of different locations throughout our great United States for veterans to be a member of a community than the Golden Triangle. Folks here get a ton of support,” added Colonel Nichols.

And for these veterans, it’s that support that means the most.

“And that’s such a wonderful thing because they are the ones who ensure our freedom,” said Air Force Veteran, Carlyle Harris.

“I came home at a time when veterans were not welcome and it’s taken a lot of years to let people know that we did a job too and we were and are appreciated,” said Army Veteran, Jerry Gibson.
This ceremony is put on by the Columbus Air Force Base, in conjunction with other city leaders.
