COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Researchers at Yale find more than 7,000 kids and teens are hospitalized or killed yearly in the United States by gun related deaths.

But the Columbus Police Department is reaching out to the community to make these numbers lower.

Senior Range Officer with the Columbus Police Department, James Hanson, is making public safety a priority.

Many families own guns for protection, and too often, kids get their hands on them, that’s when accidents happen.

“It happens a lot more than is should, it should never happen actually. Responsible gun owners should be in possession of their gun or have it locked and safely away from children,” said Officer Hanson.

To help prevent these accidents, Officer Hanson is partnering with Project Child Safe to give away free gun locks.

“As a range officer, I contacted the project child safe and they gladly sent us all of the information and the free guns locks to give away. Their philosophy is if they can save one child’s life with these gun locks, we’ve done our job,” said Officer Hanson.

Officer Hanson says the locks are easy to use and it only takes one minute.

Throughout the day, Officer Hanson gave away the locks at places throughout town.

He says it’s all about helping those in the friendly city.

“We set it up that way so that we could give back to the community and try to help our community with anything, any questions they have about guns and safety, we’re glad to answer them,” added Officer Hanson.

The locks will also be available at the Columbus Police Dept.
