FULTON, Miss. (WCBI) — One North Mississippi city is hoping to get its own chamber of commerce.

Some city leaders say it’ll help them promote their town better, and bring in more business.

Fulton Mayor Lynette Weatherford wants to show off her growing city, and she thinks a chamber of commerce can help her do that.

“Anything to pull people off of the highway, and get them to stop in Fulton, and see what a beautiful city we have here,” she said.

Weatherford says a chamber director will help highlight what Fulton has to offer – Itawamba Community College, the waterway and walking track, and of course their local businesses.

“The [Itawamba County] Development Council has provided us with a community development director, but as of last October, they have strictly started focusing on economic development, and we feel like we need someone that will take over the community development part of our town,” Weatherford said.

Brian Quinn opened Cultured Cow Yogurt & Coffee downtown in April.

He says his business has done well so far, but having a chamber would help even more.

“I really believe that someone could really draw attention to Fulton, and bring people in,” Quinn said. “It’s just a recognition issue I think.”

“Someone to coordinate new businesses coming in, as well as the retention of the businesses that are still here, and coordinate our festivals,” Weatherford said.

Quinn adds having a chamber of commerce would also make it easier for new business owners.

“There are a lot of questions,” he said. “Especially if you’re in a business that you’re new to. It would really help to answer any questions, and have a centralized contact person.”

Weatherford says city leaders plan to discuss the chamber idea at their budget meeting next month.
