DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A DeSoto County woman’s push for a ballot initiative legalizing marijuana in Mississippi has fallen short of the required number of signatures on the petition.

Kelly Jacobs says the effort was a good first step towards change.

Tuesday was the deadline for gathering the signatures needed to get Initiative 48 on the November 2016 general election ballot.

Jacobs says it was an uphill battle in conservative Mississippi, finishing with only 13, 320 signatures of the 107,000 needed to push the initiative.

She says the actual number may be a bit a higher because some of the state’s 82 counties did not provide a list of certified signatures.

Jacobs tells WCBI she may try to get the initiative on the ballot again in the future.
