Residents Dance Like Elvis for New Event

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Some North Mississippians are putting on their blue suede shoes to learn how to dance like the King of Rock n’ Roll himself.

Renowned dance instructors from across the country came to Elvis Presley’s birthplace city on Saturday to teach the fundamentals of ballroom dancing.

The Tupelo Ballroom Dance Club is celebrating Elvis’ hip-swinging music with the first ever Dancing with the King event.

The festival included several workshops and dancing contests to Elvis’ music.

Organizers say ballroom dancing is a very healthy pastime.

“One of the most fabulous things about ballroom is that it gives you physical exercise,” said organizer Rubye Del Harden. “It’s a social interaction activity. It’s very, very sports minded. It also prevents dementia. It helps you as you age to stay agile. There is absolutely nothing wrong about ballroom dancing that’s not phenomenally healthy.”

Organizers say they’re also giving out prizes to competitors at the event.
