COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — 228 years ago, the country’s founding father’s signed the United States Constitution.

But what exactly does the constitution mean to today’s young people?

Deb Shelton’s American Government class is busy learning about The Constitution.

The class of junior and senior students not only study the historic document on Constitution Day but Shelton says the class incorporates it into their daily curriculum.

“And we are looking at day-to-day operations, the committees, the powers of congress and we’re going through The Constitution article by article,” said Shelton, a history and government at Heritage Academy.

“It’s the laws we abide by, so it’s very important to know those laws,” said Jacob Swartz, a student.

Shelton’s students even have pocket-size copies of The Constitution.

While most will agree, we live in a social media driven world, some students say they would like to see others studying The Constitution so they can be better prepared to confront today’s issues.

“The Constitution among our generation isn’t in much focus as I would like it to be. We really engross in more social media, twitter, snap chat and all that and we really need to get to the core issues, such as the controversial gay marriage decision in the Supreme Court. That needs to get more attention among our generation,” said Jude Alnas, a student.

And while this class continues to dig deeper in the Constitution, students can all agree, it’s one of the most important documents in history.

“But it really does affect our lives and it will affect our future as we’ve seen in the last few months, it’s affecting the future,” said Macy Walters, a student.

“I think it’s really important that we kind of think back on our past and where we came from because if we forget that, then who are we really,” asked Hunter Short, a student.

“It’s a part of our heritage and it’s not going away and it’s something we need to look forward to and learn in order to be citizens of this great nation,” said Michael Ledbetter, a student.

Written in 1787, The Constitution was signed on September 17th.
But it wasn’t until 1788 that it was ratified by the necessary nine states.
