ACKERMAN, Miss. (WCBI) — Choctaw County students and teachers say they loved working with Steven Moss, and Phyllis Graham.

“They were great people,” said Shane Burton, Choctaw County High principal. “They were special to me, and a lot of faculty members here. It couldn’t have happened to two greater people.”

That’s why they’re dedicating part of Highway 9 to the teachers, after Moss and Graham were killed in a school bus wreck more than three years ago.

“Their halls were kind’ve adjacent to each other, and you kind’ve knew when you walked down the hallway, they were the first two people you saw, and they just kind’ve made your day in the mornings,” said colleague Shaston Coleman.

The pair’s colleagues say they were great educators, who were all about the kids.

“Mrs. Graham was awesome,” Burton said. “She treated her kids just like a mom. Nobody could do what Mrs. Graham could do in the classroom like she could.”

Moss loved his family, and coaching football.

“I really cared about him a lot, and he cared about all of his students, and all of his players – everybody he coached for,” said Dusty Pollard, a senior football player.

Moss and Graham may be gone, but their memories will always live on at Choctaw County High School, and on the new signs.

“Time heals things, but still every day you think of them,” Coleman said. “Every time you get on a bus. Every time I get on a bus, it’s just something you always think about.”

Burton says you can see one sign, exiting Ackerman on Highway 9 going north; the other, exiting Eupora going south.
