TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Demolition work has started at a boarded-up hotel in Tupelo.

For years, the 106-room property at North Gloster and McCullough was known to many as the Ramada Inn.

That hotel was sold in 2005, and the property was renamed Travelodge. However, Travelodge closed more than four years ago, and its California-based owners have since left it vacant.

The Tupelo city council is expected to take action on the hotel next week if the owners don’t follow through with their plans to demolish the property.

If that happens, Chief Operation Officer Don Lewis says they will ask them to declare the hotel a blighted property, which will allow the city of Tupelo to demolish the building.

Lewis says the property’s demolition should take about 30 days.

The current owners plan to sell the site.
