COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Decorative Arts Forum and Antique Show brought several of the south’s leading educators together for a special lecture series.
The theme for this year’s event is “Comin’ For To Carry Me Home,” 19th century mourning customs.

Guest speakers present lectures on a variety of topics such as: “Funeral Foods of The South” and “Mourning A La Mode.”

One key note speaker educated participants on the art associated with mourning traditions and customs in the 19th century.

Graham Boettcher, who is the chief curator at the Birmingham Museum of Art,  says that many 19th century mourning traditions are being reborn.

“Really mourning photography which is something that was popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century where people used to photograph their loved ones after they had died and even pose with their caskets,” said Boettcher.

The weekend of events are hosted by the Columbus Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau.
