OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s the holiday season and scammers aren’t taking a break.
This time of the year is just as busy for scammers as it is for anybody else.

From people posing as a representative from your local non-profit, to phone calls asking for personal information, local authorities want the public to be on guard.

Oktibbeha County authorities say elderly people are normally the hardest hit target, but anyone can fall victim the scammers.

“What I would say to folks is charitable giving is great, encourage everybody to do it, but if you’re going to give money in the form of cash, ask for a receipt, make sure it’s got something with a logo,” said Lt. Brett Watson with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department.
Scamming is punishable under the law, from extensive fines to even jail time.
