AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – Hope Simmons opened her business in downtown Amory last year.

Now, a hobby has turned into a new career.

“The opportunity came up, the store was for sale and I thought I was just going to do part-time, summers, Christmas’s and then Amory was really good to me and I was able to stop teaching and do this full-time,” said “Willow” owner Hope Simmons.

Simmons is part of Amory’s thriving downtown business area, which has seen a boom in the past two years.

In fact, five downtown buildings are being renovated.

” We’ve got a variety of businesses downtown now that include anything from antiques to women’s clothing. We now have men’s clothing and we just feel like we have grown to provide so much for a small town,” said Main Street Manager Carol Knight.

Recently, Amory was voted the number one town to raise a family in the state.

Knight says having a successful downtown is a big selling point.

“One of the most important things they have discovered that draws businesses, large and small, to your town is your downtown area. So, it’s pretty important,” said Knight.

And business owners like Simmons, are proud to be a part of the growing area.

“Just having a lively downtown is exciting, something to do when you come to Amory, something to look forward to,” added Simmons.

Soon, downtown Amory will also have an interactive splash pad at Frisco Park for the community to enjoy.
