STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -At just 24-years-old, Whitney Turner is living her dream, owning and operating a flower shop.

But it didn’t come easy. She’s built her business from the ground up and now, she’s sharing her story of success.

“It’s not just a job, it’s more of a passion and art,” said owner of “The Flower Company,” Whitney Turner.

That’s how Turner describes her profession as a florist.

At 16-years-old, she found her calling and is following her dreams.

“My grandparents actually own the funeral home here and she suggested I work at a florist and ever since then, it was natural. I picked up on it,” said Turner.

Turner opened her first flower shop at Welch Funeral Home. After graduating college last year, she bought out two Starkville flower shops to expand her business.

“I just started buying people out, trying to build my own company and just built it from the ground up because I started with a new name, new company, inside a funeral home and not many people want to go in the funeral home unless they have to. So my next stop was to get a location,” said Turner.

She found that location near downtown Starkville.

Turner says as a young, female business owner there are certain stigmas.

“People don’t understand that women can be just as gruff as they need to be, just like men can in certain situations; to take my business or to do what it takes to run it in a professional manner. Women have changed roles. They have gone from staying at home with the children, to doing what it takes to be the bread winner just like a man. Because now, you need two incomes to survive and support your family not just one,” said Turner.

As the orders come in and business picks up, Turner plans to keep her future goals simple.

“My business plan is to make the best florist I can possibly make,” added Turner.

Turner adds she is proud to be apart of a business thriving for women.
