STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – As a former Mississippi State student, the news was shaking to hear and I immediately wanted to talk with some students on their reaction of the day.

What did they think? What was their emotion? How did it feel?

While many say they were nervous, some say there was a sense of calm, they knew everything was going to be okay.
“So everyone just got down and everyone was kind of like on edge a little bit but we knew we were going to be okay for some reason I think,” said MSU freshman Hannah Laird.

Within minutes, word spread across campus. Students at Mississippi State alerted to a crisis situation.

“It’s been a crazy morning, the craziest since I’ve been here,” said MSU junior Drew Ellis.

Students quickly followed emergency protocol.

“I was in the computer lab when we got the Maroon alert and we looked out the window and saw people scaling out of Carpenter and climbing out the windows and stuff. And we saw police everywhere and we immediately went upstairs and got into the office,” said MSU senior Wilson Dallas.

While some students were shaken, others say their trained teachers did their best to keep students calm.

“My teacher especially knew what to do, like they had drilled it in him but there were people that were freaked out and asking questions, screaming kind of like what’s going on but he reassured everyone that we were going to be okay,” said Laird.

And they were okay.

Now their questions are for the man at the center of the lock down.

“I don’t know why anyone would ever want to do that to someone else that hasn’t done anything to them. People have their own problems but it’s no reason to take it out on someone who hasn’t done anything to you,” said Wilson.

At 2 p.m. classes resumed.
