IUKA, Miss. (WCBI) – Visitors to the Tishomingo County Courthouse in Iuka will now be able to learn about a true patriot who helped secure our nation’s independence.

The William Gray Chapter of the Mississippi Society Sons of the American Revolution dedicated a historical marker for William Gray, who fought in the revolution for three years, including taking part in the battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina. Kings Mountain is considered to be the turning point of the Revolution. Gray later settled in what is now Tishomingo County and died in 18-48. His grandson seven times removed, says unfortunately Revolutionary war heroes don’t get the same kind of recognition afforded their Civil War counterparts.

“We have a lot of patriots that fought in the revolutionary war that do not get recognition. Everyone knows of the Confederate veterans and and most everyone recognizes those but they don’t go back far enough to go back into the revolutionary war. And I do think we need to honor more of those as history goes by. And that’s what we’re trying to do here today,” says Roy Gray of the S.A.R.

Gray says the William Gray Chapter of the S.A.R. includes members from all over northeast Mississippi.
