TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Ringing in the New Year with a bottle of bubbly is a tradition for many around the world, and right here in Northeast Mississippi.

New Year’s Eve is a banner day for sales at many liquor and package stores, and those establishments know to be well-staffed.

Many customers buying alcohol for the holiday purchase beer and liquor, but the big seller on December 31st is champagne.

Gunner Goad, a customer at Oscar’s Wine and Spirits in Starkville, says “It is something I look forward to every year, ringing in the New Year, making sure New Year gets off to a good start.”

Customers aren’t the only ones excited for the new year. Merchants also look forward to this holiday. All three cash registers at Oscar’s were open, and business was brisk.

“It will be like this till ten o clock, non stop. I feel like I got a chain around my leg on this post down here,” says Sammy Perryman, an employee at Oscar’s.

The Tupelo liquor store made sure to have plenty of champagne in stock, and there is a price for every budget.

Customers can spend anywhere from $3.99 a bottle, to $360 for high end selections.

Most customers opt for more modestly-priced bottles, but make no mistake, this day is a banner day for this store.

Perryman tells WCBI that New Year’s Eve sales are booming and that they depend on them.

Oscar’s expects to sell at least 600 bottles of champagne this New Year’s Eve.

It’s estimated that about 360 million glasses of champagne will be served this year for the holiday.
