MACON, Miss. (WCBI) – In less than 30 days, some convenience stores in Macon will start closing earlier. This comes as a result of a number of complaints about people congregating late into the night at these stores.

The Board of Alderman in Macon has unanimously voted to change the hours for stores near neighborhoods.

Those stores will now be forced to close at 11 pm during the week and midnight during the weekend.

Monica Broaden works at “The Junction” near downtown. She say’s she supports the change.

“Well I think it’s a good idea due to the fact there’s a lot of burglary going on here and it will crack down on a lot of issues like that on hand,” said Broaden.

The Junction closes at 9 pm during the week and 10 pm on weekends. So, Broaden says the ordinance shouldn’t affect their business.

“Overall you hope to see some good stuff come out from this decision? Yes, yes ma’am, But it wont affect yall? No ma’am,” added Broaden.

Samaih Samara owns “Mike’s Quick Stop”. He says he doesn’t support the change.

“For any problems, it’s not the solution run away from. The solution is face it and fix it and that’s why one town like this far from everywhere, they need somewhere,” said Samara.

Now, Mike’s closes at midnight during the week and 1 am on the weekends.

Samara says business is good but he’s more worried about keeping his customers happy.

“Might hurt my customers more than hurt the business,” added Samara

The ordinance will be in effect at the end of the month.
We reached out to the Mayor for comment, but he declined.
