STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A popular summer camp is hitting the stage for another exciting performance.

In its 33-year history, this year’s Summer Scholars on-stage camp involves the biggest cast and promises even more drama.

This group of talented students are putting the final touches on their performance.

It’s all apart of the Summer Scholars Program, where gifted students from 7th through 12th grades come together to write, produce and star in their own musical.

This year, the group is performing a musical comedy, titled “In A Bind,” which promises a lot of action, adventure and even romance.

“It starts off with four students who are reading a book they don’t necessarily like and so one of the students finds another book they would like to read and it turns out its a magical book,” said student Richard Hill.

The program is divided into three weeks. The first week is a writing camp, where students develop ideas and narrate the story and the next two weeks are full of rehearsals.

Students say there are some obstacles along the way.

“It’s a big challenge to get all of that processed and on the stage and make it interesting for the audience,” said student Anna Shaw.

Shaw also says the camp has inspired her to pursue theater.

“Actually, this is probably the main reason I decided to go into musical theater. And it’s kind of inspired me to make that my ultimate goal, just because I’ve learned so much being here,” said Shaw.

For other campers, the program is a way to meet others interested in theater.

Josh Martin says everyone gets their chance to shine like a star.

“That’s what is so great about camp. Everyone is getting a part, everyone is getting their shining moment and all parts are equal. There’s really no competition, you’re just forced to be your best,” said Martin.

The free performances will be Friday at 7 PM and Saturday at 1 in McComas Hall at MSU.

The community is invited to attend.
