STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s the most popular Thanksgiving tradition…eating.

Turkey, ham, dressing and all the desserts, sometimes up to three times a day.

But just how much are we eating when we sit down at the table for turkey day?

According to the Calorie Control Council, the average American consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving.

That’s equivalent to 7 whoppers.

“On Thanksgiving Day, if you’re taking in 4,500 which is the average, then that’s four meals in one day from a fast food chain, which is not good or healthy,” said Jack Riekhof, owner of Snap Fitness in Starkville.

You might not realize it, but that’s how much the average person eats on Thanksgiving day.

Riekhof says this number doesn’t surprise him.

“No it really doesn’t. I can see that very easily when your eating a big Thanksgiving, it’s easy for those calories to add on.” said Riekhof.

USA Today compares the calorie intake to 15 hot fudge sundae’s or 12 slices of pizza.

Riekhof says its ‘ok’ to enjoy your Thanksgiving Day meal and you more than likely wont see weight gain from one day.

“There is 3,500 calories in one pound of fat. So on a regular basis, if you continue to eat like its Thanksgiving Day everyday, then it’s going to add up real quick but if you just do it on one day and you control yourself afterwards with a regular nutrition plan and exercise, then no you wont see the effects of it,” said Riekhof.

So when you sit down at the table Thursday, remember these helpful tips.

“Portion control. Try to fill up more so on protein maybe less so on the carbs and sweets but if you’re just going to do it one day and you can control yourself, then there is no need to punish yourself,” added Riekhof.

Stuffing, mashes potatoes and green bean casserole are among the top favorite Thanksgiving dishes.
