VARDAMAN, Miss. (WCBI) — Tough times are a thing of the past with the Vardaman Rams football program.

After enduring two win-less seasons, head coach Larry Gann saw his team reach new heights in his third season back with his beloved bunch.

“We managed to win 4 games,” Gann said. “The games we didn’t win we were close in all but 2. We had a good spring. Attitude of the kids is excitement. Looking forward to building to another step to where Vardaman football should be.”

The hours and hours of preparation and work put into restoring the proud football program is paying off at Vardaman as the Rams won their first football game since 2012 this past year.

Getting the wins and building off a 4-7 season is another step in the right direction, but their push back to prominence started before last season began.

“It started actually last spring,” coach Gann said. “We played pretty well against Holly Springs, Byhalia, Potts Camp and HW Byers in the spring scrimmage. That alone catapulted the off-season. We were competitive early in the year and got a little confidence going. That made a lot of difference in attitude and our kids didn’t miss practice.”

It’s the simple things with coach Gann that make the difference.

Simply put, he wants his Rams back in the postseason. To make a return to November football, the coach knows he must keep his kids focused throughout the season.

“Week to week we have to try and win the next ball game,” said Gann. “Our goal is to qualify for the playoffs. Once we do that, every week is a new week. Right now that’s our focus.”
