Video: Attorney Files Complaint Against Tupelo Mayor

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Tupelo attorney is taking his complaints against Mayor Jason Shelton to court.

Kenneth Mayfield claims email exchanges between him and Shelton amount to slander. Mayfield’s complaint requests compensatory and punitive damages along with court fees.

Court documents show a an edited version of the emails exchanged between the two.

In those exchanges, Shelton asked about the purpose of a march advocating some changes in Tupelo. That led to personal exchanges between the two.

Mayfield is a key organizer of the Coalition of Concerned Pastors and Leaders group that organized the march and requested the city make several changes, including removing the state flag.

He claims Shelton attacked his integrity.

In the email exchange, the mayor accuse Mayfield of using dishonest conduct for financial gain.

A Tupelo spokesperson says Shelton has not been served with a claim and would not comment at this time.
